QR Code Not Working? Common Problems and Fixes
When a QR code does not work, the cause is often the image, printed placement, scanning environment or encoded destination. Work through these checks before replacing the code.
The code is too small
A small code may not provide enough detail, especially when it stores a long URL or a large amount of text. Increase the physical size and test from the real distance. Around 2 × 2 cm is only a close-range starting point.
The image is blurry or compressed
Screenshots and files forwarded through messaging apps can lose sharpness. Download the original again. Use SVG for scalable print or a high-resolution PNG at the intended size.
Contrast or quiet zone problems
Use a dark pattern on a light background. Restore a clear empty margin around every side and remove busy images, borders or text placed against the modules.
The code is stretched or damaged
Keep equal width and height. Do not squeeze the code into a narrow space. Replace prints scratched, folded, stained or broken across important areas.
A logo covers too much
Error correction tolerates limited obstruction, but a large logo can still cause failure. Reduce or remove it and test the final branded version.
The destination is unavailable
The phone may decode the code while the linked page fails. Check typing, expired domains, deleted pages, invalid certificates and redirects. Test on mobile data and Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi or UPI data is wrong
For Wi-Fi, verify the exact SSID, password, capitalization, security type and hidden setting. For UPI, confirm the intended recipient in a supported app. Never proceed if an unexpected payee appears.
Camera, light or distance
Clean the lens, improve lighting, avoid glare and hold the phone steady. Move closer or farther so it can focus, then try another phone to identify a device-specific issue.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it scan before printing but not after?
It may be too small, blurred, cropped, distorted or placed on a reflective or low-contrast surface.
Can I repair a static QR code?
You can fix layout issues, but incorrect encoded data requires a newly generated code.
Why does it open the wrong page?
The wrong URL was encoded, the destination redirects elsewhere or the domain has changed ownership. Stop using it until verified.
What is the fastest test?
Display the original file at a large size on a clear screen. If it scans, investigate print size, quality, contrast and placement.
Quick checklist
- Test the original downloaded file.
- Increase size and restore contrast.
- Preserve the quiet zone.
- Check the exact encoded data.
- Verify the destination and try another phone.
