QR Code Printing Size Guide for Cards, Posters and Packaging
There is no single perfect QR code size for every print job. The right size depends on scanning distance, encoded data, print quality, surface and lighting. A code on a business card can be smaller than one displayed on a wall, but both need enough detail and empty space.
A practical starting point
For close-range items such as business cards, labels and table cards, approximately 2 × 2 cm is a sensible minimum starting point for a simple QR code. Use a larger size when possible, especially for a long URL, dense data, textured material or lower-quality print. A minimum is not a guarantee, so test the finished product.
Estimate from scanning distance
A common planning guideline is to make the code width roughly one-tenth of the expected scanning distance. A code scanned from 1 metre may need to be around 10 cm wide. Camera quality, lighting, content density and placement can require a larger code.
Keep the quiet zone
Do not crop the blank margin or place text, borders and graphics too close to the pattern. Maintain at least the quiet zone produced by the generator on every side.
Resolution and file format
Use SVG for professional layouts and large-format printing because it scales cleanly. A high-resolution PNG works for small and medium print, but enlarging a small PNG creates blurred edges. Do not use a compressed screenshot as the print master.
Print test
Print one sample at actual size. Scan it with different phones, angles and lighting, then verify the exact destination or encoded information. Avoid glossy reflections, folds, seams and strongly curved surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum print size?
About 2 × 2 cm can be a starting point for close scanning and simple content, but larger is safer when space permits.
Can I print a QR code in colour?
Yes, when strong contrast is maintained.
Why does it scan on screen but not paper?
The print may be too small, blurred, low contrast, reflective, distorted or missing its quiet zone.
Should I test a printer proof?
Yes. Test the intended size, material and finish before bulk production.
Quick checklist
- Dark pattern on a light plain background.
- Square proportions preserved.
- Quiet zone visible on every side.
- File has enough resolution.
- Physical proof tested before bulk printing.
