How to Create a WhatsApp QR Code with a Prefilled Message
A WhatsApp QR can open a chat to a chosen number and optionally prepare a message. This works well on posters, product packaging, business cards and enquiry forms where typing a phone number would add friction.
1. Use the full international phone number
Enter the phone number with the country code and remove spaces, brackets and local dialing prefixes that are not part of the international number. For an Indian mobile number, for example, the country code is 91 followed by the mobile number.
Test the generated link before printing. A correct-looking number with the wrong country code will open the wrong destination or fail to start a chat.
2. Keep the prefilled message useful
A short message can help you identify where an enquiry came from. Examples include “I need a quotation for flex printing” or “I scanned the service card and would like more details.” Keep it editable so the customer can add context before sending.
Avoid making the message excessively long or inserting sensitive customer information. The QR should start the conversation, not replace a proper form when detailed personal data is required.
3. Label the QR clearly
Place a direct call to action next to the code, such as “Scan to WhatsApp Us” or “Scan for a Quote.” The label should match what happens after scanning. Clear labels improve trust because users know which app or action to expect.
4. Good places to use it
WhatsApp QR codes are useful on shop boards, vehicle stickers, brochures, packaging inserts, visiting cards and invoices. For customer support, route the QR to a business number that is actually monitored during the hours you advertise.
If you later change the WhatsApp number, any static printed QR pointing to the old number must be replaced.
5. Test the complete customer journey
Scan the downloaded image, verify that WhatsApp opens, confirm the recipient number and check that the prepared text is readable. Test on both Android and iPhone when the QR will be distributed widely.
